Social network X (formerly Twitter) is testing a free version of its AI chatbot, Grok, which has previously only been available to premium, paying subscribers.

Developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI, Grok could soon be accessible to non-paying users as part of a pilot program in certain regions, including New Zealand.

This move is likely aimed at expanding the user base and speeding up product feedback to enhance competitiveness with other popular AI chatbots.

Key Points:

  1. Free Access Testing: X has begun testing free access to Grok for non-premium users, though only in certain regions.
  2. Usage Limits: Free users are subject to usage limits, such as a cap of 10 queries per two hours for the Grok-2 model, 20 queries per two hours with the Grok-2 mini model, and three image analysis questions per day.
  3. User Requirements: To use Grok for free, accounts must be over a week old and linked to a phone number.
  4. Expansion of Grok Features: Originally, Grok’s features were exclusive to Premium and Premium+ users.
  5. xAI’s Competitive Strategy: This expansion could help xAI gain more user insights and better compete with other AI models like ChatGPT and Claude.

Key Quotes:

  • “TechCrunch was able to confirm that X is at least testing access to Grok for free users in New Zealand.” – TechCrunch

Opening up Grok to free users could be a strategic move for xAI, allowing for faster product refinement and a larger testing base.

By extending access, xAI may gather valuable user data and feedback, enhancing Grok’s capabilities in the face of intense competition in the AI chatbot arena.

This trial could also signal a larger push from X and xAI to increase accessibility and build engagement, potentially attracting a wider audience and increasing market share.
