OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT Atlas, a new AI-powered web browser designed to make online browsing more conversational and intuitive. Available now for MacOS, with Windows, iOS, and Android versions on the way, Atlas brings ChatGPT’s intelligence directly into the browser interface. Users can search the web, summarize pages, generate text, and even automate daily browsing tasks — all through natural language commands. With this move, OpenAI steps into direct competition with Google Chrome, Perplexity’s Comet, and other AI-enhanced browsers.
“We believe we can start in the long run to have an amazing tool for vibe lifing,” said Will Ellsworth, research lead for agent mode in Atlas. “So delegating all kinds of tasks both in your personal and professional life to the agent in Atlas.”
During the livestream, CEO Sam Altman and team demoed Atlas and showcased how AI can transform the everyday browsing experience.
The company says agent mode is faster than standard ChatGPT and includes new safeguards to keep users in control.
ChatGPT Atlas could mark a turning point in how people interact with the internet, shifting from typing queries into search engines to conversing directly with AI while browsing. Its launch challenges Google Chrome’s dominance by embedding intelligence at the browser level rather than as an add-on. If successful, Atlas could make AI-first browsing the new standard, blending productivity, creativity, and automation into a single experience.
